iPhoneOS 4 announced, adding multitasking, along with other improvements

The next major version of iPhoneOS has just been announced – the iPhoneOS 4.  Among many of the improvements, multitasking support for third party apps is one of the highlight.

The new OS, together with the next generation of iPhone, will be launched in this summer.  However, there is a big disappointment to iPhone 3G users and below, some of the new features, including multitasking support, will not be available for these devices because the hardware does support it (according to Steve).

Here are the summary of some significant improvements for iPhoneOS 4:

  • Multitasking, it is still not the “real” multitasking but third party apps can use the services to perform some background tasks.
  • Folders with “intelligent naming”, user can create folders and put the app icons in the folders, instead of spreading the icons across many pages.
  • Enhanced mail with a unified inbox, multiple Exchange accounts and threaded messages.
  • iBooks. Available in iPad and it make sense to be here too.
  • Better enterprise support: including remote device management and wireless app distribution.
  • Game center social network: like the PS3 and Xbox 360.
  • iAd mobile advertising: Think AdMob.

Well there are certainly many interesting and much anticipated features added to the new OS.  And we shall see whether it will create another wave and stop the Google take over.
