Sony Ericsson to cut 2000 jobs
Sony Ericsson, the No. 4 phone manufacturr, has announced a massive restructuring worldwide and will eventually cut 4000 jobs (out of 9900). Sony Ericsson will close its Research Triangle Park operation by the third quarter of 2010, cutting 400 plus jobs. Nokia sues Apple for infringement of GSM, UMTS and WLAN patents
Nokia, the mobile phone giant, has just hit Apple with a patent infringment lawsuit. Nokia claims that “all iPhones models shipped” infringe on ten of Espoo’s patents relating to GSM, UMTS, and WiFi. According to Nokia’s press release, it has already successfully entered into license agreements including these patents with approximately 40 companies, “virtually all the leading mobile device vendors,” and Apple’s refused to agree to “appropriate” license terms. Nokia posts 559 million Euro loss for 3rd quarter, smartphone marketshare down to 35%
First time in 10 years, Nokia had just posted a 559 million Euro loss for the 3rd quarter. It is also reported that its marketshare for smartphone has also drop from 41% to 35%. That’s a big number for just 3 months. The loss comes after a reported 20% drop in sales and 1.17 billion euros in write-downs, mostly for impairment charges on Nokia Siemens Networks.
