About half a year after it was first revealed by Microsoft, Windows Phone 7 is finally ready to roll now. It has just been announced by Microsoft that it has reached Gold status and has been released to manufacturing (RTM) for final testing before releasing their Windows Phone 7 devices. So we should be able to see the Windows Phone 7 devices in the market soon.

Terry Myerson from Microsoft has some stories to tell for the development of Windows Phone 7:

“Today is the day that the Windows Phone team has been driving towards, and we’re very excited to say that we’ve reached the biggest milestone for our internal team – the release to manufacturing (RTM) of Windows Phone 7! While the final integration of Windows Phone 7 with our partners’ hardware, software, and networks is underway, the work of our internal engineering team is largely complete.

Windows Phone 7 is the most thoroughly tested mobile platform Microsoft has ever released. We had nearly ten thousand devices running automated tests daily, over a half million hours of active self-hosting use, over three and a half million hours of stress test passes, and eight and a half million hours of fully automated test passes. We’ve had thousands of independent software vendors and early adopters testing our software and giving us great feedback. We are ready.

I last posted on this blog when we reached the Technical Preview milestone, and we’ve received some great feedback since then which we’ve been able to respond to and improve the smart design throughout the OS. For example, folks loved the Facebook integration in the People Hub, but they also wanted ways to filter their contacts so only the Facebook friends they really know will show up in their contact list – we’ve added support for that. We’ve also made it easy to “like” a post right from the People Hub, or quickly post a message to someone’s Facebook wall directly.

This has been one of the most incredible product development efforts I’ve ever been a part of. Today’s milestone is exciting not just because of what we’ll deliver to customers later this year, but how it sets us up for success over the long term in the mobile space… we’re really just getting started.”

Additionally, we are integrating our KIN team with the Windows Phone 7 team, incorporating valuable ideas and technologies from KIN into future Windows Phone releases. We will continue to work with Verizon in the U.S. to sell current KIN phones.”

I thought the KIN phones are doing quite well but some rumours stated the sales of the phones had not been good.

Good bye, KIN, although we have never met.

For a phone that is emphasizing social networking and media, this sound a bit strength to me. “We didn’t want the device always pulling data from the network,” said one engineer, citing battery life and immature social network APIs as primary reasons why.

Well, that is your choice.

It is official now. Microsoft has announced the babies from its Danger acquisition. 2 social networking centric Windows Phones, KIN ONE and KIN TWO have been announced.

The two new phones are built with the same Zune HD foundation. The entire UI is built surrounding social media. However, it has a very different user experience compared the Windows Phone 7. It supports OTA software update but it is not exactly a smartphone. It is missing a BIG feature that all smartphone users are enjoying – you can’t install any third party applications.

Kin One – a curved square slider with a QVGA display, 4GB of internal storage, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, and a full QWERTY keyboard.

Kin Two – has a HVGA display and a more traditional landscape QWERTY slide form factor. It also moves up to an 8 megapixel cam and 8GB of internal storage.

Both phones have wifi and Bluetooth in additional to the 3G mobile connectivity. The internal storage size is not a big issue as both phones are utilizing the cloud based storage and service to storage contacts, medias and etc.

The differences between the 2 phones are mainly the form factors and some of the hardware specs. Other than these, the user experiences are largely the same.

There is an interesting UI element call KIN Spot which is a small green dot below the screen where users can drag and drop pictures, media, contact to it. And then users can tab the green dot and users can preview the message, add some text, and choose from MMS or email to send it out.

You can view the UI walk-through after the break.
